Savannah’s maritime history is closely tied to rum, sailors, and Atlantic trade. This historic waterfront building, traditionally described as an 18th-century sailors’ inn, is associated with legends of rum stored in underground cellars and secret tunnels allegedly used for smuggling and shanghaiing sailors. Its colorful reputation also connects it to pirate lore and Robert Louis Stevenson’s Treasure Island. While these stories reflect rum’s place in Savannah’s seafaring heritage, their historical accuracy remains disputed. The Society of Architectural Historians dates the building’s historic core to approximately 1794–1808, with substantial later alterations.
